Having all information is ideal before being able to accurately solve a problem. In order to correctly and accurately diagnose and form a treatment plan, we offer Digital Cone Beam Computed Tomography. Much like a medical CT scan, this is a 3D x-ray that is taken only around your head. The CT scan looks similar to the traditional Panoramic x-ray. However, this newer technology has lower radiation dosage than the older, non-digital panoramic scans, while also providing a 3D mapping of tissue. With a digital image, we also have options to make computer-made guides and tools to allow for easier and more precise dental treatment.
A Cone Beam Computed Tomography scan is recommended:
- Prior to placing dental implants to replace missing teeth.
- Prior to extraction of wisdom teeth
- To address concerns about potential tumors/cysts
- To detect and navigate hidden tooth root canals
When a Cone Beam scan is taken you should expect to remove all jewelry and remain still for less than a minute. There are a few head positioning guides which are used to make sure your head is in the correct position. The door is closed and lead apron is placed while the scan is completed.
